The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has summoned Kisumu County City Manager, Michael Abala Wanga, to appear at its Integrity Centre headquarters in Nairobi after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) approved plans to charge him.
In a statement issued on Thursday, EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud said the summons relate to allegations that Wanga may have used questionable academic certificates to secure his current position.
According to the EACC, investigations found that the authenticity of the academic papers presented by Wanga could not be verified. The DPP subsequently reviewed the findings and concluded that there is sufficient evidence for prosecution.
The anti-graft body also cited a separate incident in which Wanga allegedly approved travel and allowances for a person who was not a county employee. The individual is said to have travelled to Lagos, Nigeria, in July 2024, using documents that falsely indicated they were on official county duty.
EACC stated that Wanga is expected to face several charges, including forgery, uttering false documents, fraudulent acquisition of public property, and use of forged certificates, contrary to provisions of the Penal Code, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, and the Kenya National Examinations Council Act.
“The Commission hereby directs Mr. Michael Abala Wanga to present himself at EACC Headquarters, Integrity Centre, Nairobi, immediately for processing,” said Mohamud.
The EACC has urged Wanga to comply with the summons and cooperate as investigations move into the prosecution phase.
